neurological motor outcomes when compared to late surgery performed more than 12 hours and within 14 days after the
traumatic spinal cord injury.
With 17 clinics in 12 countries involved, the SCI-POEM study is the largest ongoing study on spinal cord injury in Europe. The
first participants have been recruited in Romania and Croatia; the British research ethics application is still pending. The
following British hospitals will be involved in the study: King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, Oxford
University Hospitals NHS Trust, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust and the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. The Foundation’s research director, Dr. Joost J. van Middendorp, is
the lead investigator in the UK and is coordinating the preparations and conduct of the study for involved British hospitals.
